The decoration of this vase - Western Xia Dynasty - in two lobed reserves with a floral motif, was obtained by scratching the cover until the white-out is uncovered; as well as the stylized cloud decoration that separates the reserves.
Prof. Ye Zhemin in the review 'Palace Museum Journal', (n° 3, 2000), Beijing, comments: 'The cover of this vase is bright in colour, a sprig of peony has been engraved in its luminosity. On the neck and shoulders in a circular area the glazing is not spread: these are the traces left during the firing for the superimposition on the first of another vase in an upside down position. It is a characteristic of the Western Xia Dynasty. A pottery of this type, endowed with these elements, belonging to ethnic minorities, is certainly something very rare to see in a Western museum'.
