Large head with irregular surface, sunken face in the classic heart shape, with tapered coffee bean eyes.
Called 'Lukungu lwa Kindi' i.e. mwami wa kindi skull, it is a very old object from Benakagera (Baliga) village located between Mulungu and Kigulube.
As with all objects used in Bwami rituals, we must use caution in defining their use, function, and meaning. These elements are linked to many circumstances, and in particular, to the proverb that is sung around that object, to the way it is used, and to the relationships that exist between objects in a particular context in which it is used.
Lega anthropomorphic statues are mostly made of ivory, bone (elephant), wood, clay from termite mounds (muntita), copal resin or stone. They come in a great variety of sizes, shapes, degrees of stylization, decorative motifs, patina, color, execution and quality craftsmanship.
