Asia and its fairy tales, from the great project "Favole dei 4 continenti" (Fairy tales of the Four Continents) produced by the Museum of Chinese Art and Ethnography and editor EMI.
A new exhibit at the Museum of Chinese Art and Ethnography of Parma: from November 13th 2022 to January 14th 2023: "Asia". Born from the great project "Favole dei 4 continenti" and produced by our Museum and by the EMI publishing house, this work, through the publication of 4 volumes, aims to enhance the great work of collecting, transcribing and translating fairy tales of non-European peoples, carried out by the Xaverian Missionaries during their centenary work.
The fable is one of the oldest narrative traditions. It has always been a common thread between generations. Its transmission, far from its context of origin, makes use of the work of many travelers who in modern and contemporary times have imprinted those words, narrated or sung, on paper. They translated the texts from the indigenous languages into the official languages of the countries of origin. Among those travelers are the Xaverians, a missionary congregation founded in Parma by Saint Guido Maria Conforti in 1895..
The goal of the project is to bring traditional fairy tales to the knowledge of the general public, as to ensure that great human values imbued with experience and tradition can inspire new Western generations.
Each story is accompanied by an illustration, which is important for the reader as to get closer to the styles and symbols of a distant world. Four different female artists have been called to give shape and color to the tales of the different continents. The first volume, published by the EMI publishing house, who was illustrated by Valentina Bongiovanni with an oriental style and trait, is dedicated to Asia. It is no coincidence that the artistic dimension has been entrusted to four women. If the great work of saving and transcribing the fairy tales was the responsibility of a mainly male missionary body, the illustrative counterpart is deliberately female. A continuous testimony of the great dialogue between generations, peoples, and even genres of the world .

The exhibition journey of the Museum of Chinese Art and Ethnography includes 10 large-scale works which unfold among the showcases dedicated to the permanent collection: they will give life to the great traditional fairy tales of Asia. Bongiovanni's illustrations invite us to be immersed in the atmospheres of ancient China, Japan, India and Indonesia. The exploration of this exhibition foresees that each exhibited work is accompanied by the significant passages of the fable to which the illustration refers. A great combination of words and figures will be the very soul of the exhibition..

The exhibition Asia is produced by the Xaverian Cultural Foundation, and EMI – Editrice Missionaria Italiana, with the contribution of the Cariparma Foundation and the patronage of the Municipality of Parma, AMEI (Association of Italian Ecclesiastical Museums) and in collaboration with Scintille Book Club...
The Museum is opened: from Tuesday to Saturday 9am-1pm and 3pm-7pm, and on Sunday 3pm-7pm.
