Exhibit 2018-19: “Eternal Mothers - Madri Eterne”
An intercultural journey through representations of motherhood at the Museum of Chinese Art and Ethnography: A journey around the world to discover the varied interpretations of the magical moment of motherhood.
The museum inhaugurated the exhibition "Madri Eterne" (Eternal Mothers) on Sunday Dec. 2nd 2018, an intercultural journey through representations of motherhood at the Museum of Chinese Art and Ethnography.
Through this exhibit, our aim is to discover the different representations and perceptions of motherhood in an intercultural and intertemporal journey.
The human vision on motherhood is not univocal. Mother Earth and her anthropomorphic representations descends into the cultural fabric of each people, and its expressions are different according to the ethnic group that wonders on its essence. Each culture aims to give a physical representation, permeated by the sacredness and the eternal mystery of the cycle of reproduction.
Every representation of motherhood transcends from an ideal, univocal and universally accepted vision, and falls into a specific, intrinsic reality, full of myths, ancestral traditions, local cultures, exogenous influences.
Starting from this knowledge, the exhibit "MADRI ETERNE" develops the common meaning of motherhood, reflecting on the different representations of knowledge, and the experience of motherhood itself. Interesting is to note that a primordial experience, such as the birth and care of children, has artistic or handicraft returns which are so different according to the peoples and ethnicities of origin. The aim of this exhibition is a profound reflection in a multicultural world; it is a tangible transport of a common destiny of the human being in its earthly celebration.
The exhibit highlights paintings, sculptures, tapestries and photographs of Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Ecuadorian, Mexican, Australian, African and Indian civilizations.
Eternal Mothers
It's dedicated to all those who did not really expect it.
To those who were not ready. To those who will never be.
To those who still wait, with a thorn in the heart.
To all those who hope to become one, and to those who have lost hope.
And to the many who have lived motherhood to the end..
